Not So Fishy Facts
Omega-3 is an “essential fatty acid” from the family of ‘good fats’ (polyunsaturated) which are not just good, but “essential” in the diet. It is also known to help prevent heart disease and important for the healthy function of many body parts, including brain function.
Western diets typically contain little Omega-3 as Hydrogenation, the process used to extend shelf life, removes them but Omega-3 is found naturally in oily fish, such as mackerel, salmon and sardines, and some plant crops such as rapeseed, but cannot be made by the body so must be taken in the diet or in supplement form
The FSA (Food Standards Agency) recommends adults and kids over 12 eat at least 2 portions of fish per week, one of which should be oily, yet 70% don’t eat any at all! The wholemeal bases are available in rounds (12” or 16”) or rectangles (15” x 11”) to help with portion control. They are delivered part-baked so bake quickly in 5-7 minutes, once topped (depending on oven).
